4. Mirror Image

Genesis 1:27

When I look in the mirror I see me. When you look at a mirror I’m standing in front of, you see me. In both cases, neither of us are truly seeing the real me, rather we are seeing the image of me. The shape, size, quality and condition of the mirror can affect the reflected image of me, but it cannot affect the reality of me. If you remove the mirror from my presence, it will not reflect my image of all.

God created mankind with his image in them. They reflected God. Man did not look like God, but when you looked at man you saw the image of God. We were created to be mirrors reflecting God’s Glory.

The mirror became damaged by sin (willful disobedience), and that damage has been passed down from generation to generation. The mirror that we are each meant to be, is farther damaged by sin (our inability to hit the mark no matter how hard we try). Sin, (the power of evil let loose in the world) works like a sandblaster on everyone, pitting and chipping our reflective nature. Many in their rebelliousness cannot reflect the Glory of God because they are fleeing his presence.

If we stop our willful disobedience of God’s will, and turn to God, through faith in Jesus Christ we will be reconciled and restored to right relationship with God. He forgives us when we do our best and still miss the mark. Through the power of prayer we fight back against the evil in the world. In right relationship with God we begin reflecting His Glory once again.
