Genesis 2-3
God planted a garden, he called it Eden. Eden is related to the word “luxurious”. The garden was beautiful, full of good things to eat, and the home of Adam and Eve. In the garden they had a good life. They had only one rule to remember and obey. They had a lot to lose, and with their disobedience they lost it all.
They lost their innocence. From a single rule they went to living in a world where almost every choice has moral implications. Living a righteous life “a life of right relationships” became very difficult. They lost the life of luxury, life was now hard. Hard work was now a necessity of life. Life became painful, both physically and emotionally. Because of the sin of disobedience, they now lived a life of struggle. They struggled to survive, and struggled to overcome negative emotions. Original sin cost mankind a lot.
Gen. 3:8 tells us that God would come to the garden in the cool of the day to spend time with his friends. He had created mankind to have a relationship with them. He desired to love them, nurture them, and bless them. Original sin shattered that relationship.
Sin never just hurts the sinner. Sin hurts the ones we love and the ones who love us. Sin releases the power of evil into the world. We hurt when we see someone we love making sinful choices, how much more does God hurt for all of fallen mankind. With sin, everyone loses. Sin made God a loser too.
