12. God Calls

Genesis 4:26 “… At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.”

Righteous men call on the name of Lord in prayer. When we are in right relationship with someone we’re comfortable calling on them in our time of need. We are comfortable sharing with them our joys, our victories and even our defeats and failures. Righteous men gather in community and fellowship. Together they call out the name of the Lord in praise and thanksgiving.

After the fall men were born unrighteous. We do not think of unrighteous people calling on the name of the Lord. We’re more likely to hear unrighteous men using the name of God to curse their fellow man. Yet in this verse we learn that soon after the fall some of mankind turned back to God. They begin to call upon his name once again.

Why did this unrighteous people turn from their wicked ways and seek a right relationship with God? Some unrighteous men are driven to seek God by fear and desperation. It has been said that there are no atheists in a foxhole. I do not know if that is always true; I do know that in our darkest moment God is always shining a light. His light leads us to himself.

I believe we are created with a God shaped hole in our heart. It is a hole that only God can fill. I believe we can only call on the name of the Lord because from the moment of our conception he has been calling us. He calls us by name. He calls us to himself. He calls us to righteous, and he will continue to call until we answer.
