Genesis 6:2-3 “…the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal …” (NIV)
Translations vary, and scholars do not have a consensus as to what the words mean. I believe “Sons of God” refers to the men in Gen. 4:26 who called upon the name of the lord. While their voices called upon the name of the Lord their eyes turn to the daughters of unrighteous men. They liked what they saw for the women are pleasing to their eyes. In spite of the women’s unrighteousness, they chose to marry them anyway. They were calling upon the name of the Lord, while disobeying him at the same time. God said he would not contend with men forever, for they were mortal/flesh. They were continually choosing the physical over the spiritual. They were choosing death over life.
They repeated the pattern first set by Eve in Genesis 3:6. Eve looked at and saw the fruit, she found it pleasing to the eye, and she took it and ate it. She set the pattern that mankind has been repeating ever since. We look at what we know we should not be looking at. We find it attractive and enticing and then we take it. We do it over and over. Children look at candy before they steal it. People on a diet, look at food before they eat it. We plot and scheme in our mind’s eye before we act upon it.
We recognize the pattern; how do we break it? How do we break the cycle of Sin? Psalms 119:37 reads “Turn my eyes away from worthless things …”. In Ephesians 1:18 Paul prays “that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you”. If we are ever going to break the cycle of sin we must turn our eyes from the things of the world and turn the eyes of our heart back to God.
