23. A Process & Progress Promise

Genesis 12:1-5

God spoke to Abram. He gave him the first step to take. Get up, pack up, picked up, and moved out. Any journey with God begins with a first step. God didn’t tell Abram where he was headed. God said follow me and I will show you the way. Abram had to trust God to lead him to the right destination.

God makes Abram a promise. God’s promise is dependent upon Abram’s obedience. If Abram remains faithful he will father a great nation, and his name will be made great. God will bless him and he will become a blessing to others. God will treat other people in like manner as they treat Abram. Through Abram all the nations of the earth will end up being blessed.

God’s promise did not have a fulfillment date. There was no point in time that Abram could point to and say that the promise had been kept. It was not that kind of promise. It was a promise of process and progress that all depended upon Abram’s continual obedience. At any time Abram could say “God has blessed me, God is blessing me and as I remain faithful God will continue to bless me”.

God still makes these types of promises today. If you desire to have patience, to be compassionate, to have a healthy marriage, or to be Godly parents, ask God. Listen to his answer and take the first step. Be faithful in the process, and marvel at the progress. He made a great nation out of Abram; there is no limit to what he can make out of you and me.
