Genesis 14:1-16
There will always be people who want to be king. Whenever there’s a project there’s no shortage of people wanting to head it up. Some like the power, some like the prestige, and some just like the rewards. Some want to be king because they don’t want anyone telling them what to do. It’s like that today, and it was like that in the time of Abram.
Every little town had its own king, and it seemed every king wanted a bigger Kingdom. To increase their kingdom in size they could grow their own, or they could take from somebody else. In chapter 14 you have nine Kings all fighting each other. You had four on one side and five on the other. When the fight was over the confederation of four kings had won. The victors took food supplies, provisions and captives and left. Lot and all his possessions were taken captive along with many others.
When Abram heard of what it happened he gathered as men and gave chase. He attacked and defeated the four kings. He brought back all the goods, and all the captives including Lot and his possessions. Abram and his men had defeated the confederation of the four kings. He was more powerful than the four combined. He was wealthy and was the head of a host of people that were already on the way to becoming a nation. He could have called himself king, but he did not. Abram knew a truth. The one thing that is always better than being an earthly king is being a child of God. When we recognize God as King, being a child of the king is the greatest thing we can ever be.
