43. If It’s God’s Will

Genesis 24:1-9

The bible can teach us in many ways. It can teach us by direct command as in “Thou shall not…” It can teach us by parable. A parable is an earthly story with a point and the point has a heavenly parallel. The bible can teach us by bad example. The Old Testament is full of mistakes and sins that we can learn from. It can also teach us by good example.  Chapter 24 is such a section of scripture.

To marry is one of the most important choices we make in life. Ask God to help you know if that is his will for your life. Abraham knew God wanted Isaac to have a wife. In his culture it was Abraham’s responsibility to find that wife. We can learn from the way Abraham approached this task.

Abraham’s approach makes clear where not to look. If you do not want a Canaanite spouse do not going searching in Canaan. Christian men and women should want to be married to a Godly spouse. They will not find that person by searching in the cesspool of the world. Abraham knew that if Isaac’s wife was to be a godly woman she must come from a culture that believed in his God.

Abraham also knew that if he was going to find the right wife for Isaac, God had to be involved in the process. Abraham told his servant that God would send an angel before him. Before you go on a search for a spouse, go to your knees in prayer. Ask the lord to lead your search. Abraham is trusting God to lead his servant to a wife for Isaac. He is trusting God to find the woman that will be the wife Isaac needs. When we find the spouse we need, they will be the spouse we want.

We can learn by Abraham’s good example. If you’re looking for a godly spouse start your search with God. Ask him to lead your search. He will lead you to where his children can be found. Trust him to introduce you to the spouse you need. If it’s God’s will, then it should be God’s lead.
