Genesis 24:10-50
Is it chance, is it choice or is it God? That is a question that Christians find themselves asking, and not always agreeing upon the answer. Some Christians believe that God being God means he is in complete control of everything. A drunk driver killed a man trimming his hedges. I heard the driver’s mother say that she found comfort in knowing that it was the man’s time to die. She believed God was in control of everything. She was upset that I believed the man died not because it was his time, but because her son chose to drink and drive.
Some believe that it is always chance or choice. They believe the age of miracles ended with Jesus. They believe that God no longer takes an active role in the affairs of mankind. They ignore the verses of the bible that teach us that “we have not because we asked not”.
Abraham’s servant was somewhere in the middle. He prayed and asked god to grant him success. When Rebekah gave the correct response to his question, he was ready to believe that she was the one that God had chosen. He was also open to the chance that she was not the one. He explained the situation to her family. He then asked them to answer his question. Is she or is she not to be Isaac’s wife? He asked them to tell him so he might know which way to turn.
Many things happen in our lives. Some happen by chance, some happen by choice and some happen because God makes them happen. It is easiest to recognize the hand of God when what happens is a direct response to prayer. If you wish to see God working in your life more often, spend more time talking to him about what is happening in your life. Talk to him about your fears, your hopes, your desires and your dreams. God hears and He answers. When you spend time talking to God, expect to see Him work. The eyes of faith will see God’s hands at work where the world sees only coincidence.
