Genesis 39:1-6
The Lord was with Joseph, and he was sold into slavery. This disproves the belief that nothing bad will ever happens to you if you’re walking with the Lord. You can be in a hurricane, drought, flood, wildfire, drive by shooting or flu epidemic and still be walking with the Lord. You can be walking with the Lord and have your house burn down, your spouse die and be audited by the IRS. In the midst of anything and everything terrible God can be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. That makes a difference. It makes a difference in the way you feel about what is happening. It makes a difference in the way you react to what is happening. Even when you cannot see how you are being blessed, God with you makes it possible for you to be a blessing to others.
Joseph’s new master saw that the lord was with him. He saw that the lord was giving Joseph success at the tasks he was given. God was making Joseph a valuable slave. Joseph’s master recognized his value and placed Joseph in charge of his household. This scripture says Potiphar was blessed because God was with Joseph. The blessing of the lord was on everything Potiphar had both in his field and in his house. With Joseph in charge, Potiphar had nothing to worry about other than what he wanted to eat.
When we think of God blessing us, we think of our household and our fields prospering. Here is Joseph as a slave being blessed by God and it means his master is the one being enriched. It is an example of God blessing someone to make them a blessing. What would you choose in order to be a blessing? Would you choose to take a pay cut to be a blessing? Would you choose to work among the sick and the poor in order to be a blessing? What price would we pay in order that God might make us a blessing? Being blessed by God is not about us. Being blessed by God is about others. When we walk with God, others are blessed.
