95. Careful Words

Genesis 49: 8 -15

A parent’s words are powerful. Jacob may not have been able to predict the future, but his words definitely helped shape the future. When Jacob blessed Judah, he intended that the other eleven brothers would carry out his wishes. He tells Judah, that his brothers would praise him. He tells Judah that he would conquer his enemies. He compared Judah to a lion’s cub that would grow into a mighty lion. He tells Judah that his descendants would be the future leaders and rulers of the nation of Israel. He speaks to Judah of a nation that is at peace where it is safe to tether a donkey to a vine without fear. He references the dyeing of Judah’s robes a royal red. He described Judah as being healthy and handsome. Jacob trusts that his sons will honor his wishes. He has just appointed Judah and his descendants to the leadership of the nation of Israel.

Jacob tells Zebulun that his descendants will live by the seashore. That their cities will become a haven for ships. He tells him that his border will extend toward Sidon. We have no way of knowing for sure, but I believe Zebulun must have loved the sea. Zebulun had lived much of his life in desert conditions. Jacob wanted to make him happy. Jacob is giving his son hope for himself and his descendants. According to Biblical records, neither Zebulun nor his descendants ever lived on the shore of the sea.

Jacob intended his words to have an immediate effect upon Issachar. He tells Issachar that he needs motivation. If he continues to be lazy, he will end up working for others. Jacob wants his son to realize you cannot coast through life. Jacob realizes his son needs motivation, and he tries to provide it.

Jacob’s blessing is his final attempt to shape the direction of his sons and their descendants lives. His first three sons he gave truth and encouragement to change. Judah he gave praise and responsibility. Zebulun he gave hope. To Issachar he gave a warning and motivation. Words are powerful, and because of that, Jacob is choosing his words with care. For good or evil, a parent’s words shape their children’s future. Pick them with care.
