Genesis 49: 16 -27
We cannot know the complete meaning of Jacob’s blessings. We do not know enough about the twelve brothers. I have tried to fill in the unknown with my imagination. My imagination may be close to the truth, or I may have missed the mark terribly.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were all shepherds. Joseph told Pharaoh that his brothers were all shepherds. Reading between the lines, I believe Asher had other aspirations. I think he hoped to be a farmer or perhaps a cook. He would have been afraid this would disappoint his father. Many fathers hope to see their sons carry on the family trade. To Asher Jacob says one sentence. He says “Asher’s food will be rich; he will provide delicacies fit for a king.” I think Jacob was giving Asher’s choice of career his blessing.
Benjamin was the youngest of twelve brothers; he was the baby of the family. Jacob had always protected Benjamin. His blessing to Benjamin Jacob acknowledges that he is a man. Jacob describes him as a ravenous wolf devouring his prey. He is telling Benjamin that he is proud of him. Jacob recognizes Benjamin has grown into manhood and is courageous. Such words would be a blessing to any son.
Dan must have been a quiet boy who grew into a quiet man. Jacob compares him to a snake. The snake is quiet, but deadly. Jacob recognizes that Dan does not have the flash of anger like his older brothers. Dan is deliberate, but when he strikes, he is effective. Jacob calls for Dan to always strike on the side of justice.
Jacob’s sons wanted his approval. They wanted him to be proud of them. Most of all they needed to know he loved them. I believe his blessing proves he did. Not everyone has a father like Jacob, but we all have a heavenly father. God will always love us. He has a blessing for each of us. He will give to each the blessing appropriate to them. All we have to do is receive it.
