J8. Eye on the Prize

James 1:12 “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” NIV

In the writing of James, a test and a trial are not the same thing. A test is something (such as a series of opportunities or exercises) for measuring the skill, knowledge, capacities, commitment or aptitudes of a Christian. A trial is the process of trying, or putting to the proof, a characteristic of Christlikeness through an ordeal requiring stamina and endurance.

A Christian has many characteristics and gifts. God verifies our growth in some Christian characteristics by giving us tests. When God gives us an opportunity to give, it is a test of our generosity. The world also gives opportunities to give, this a test of our discernment; we pass the test by knowing whom and what God wants us to support. This type of test gives an instant blessing when we pass it and an instant correction when we fail. It teaches us about ourselves and helps us to become more Christlike.

In verse 12, James is speaking of trials not tests. Trials have an ongoing nature. Trials test our ability to endure and remain faithful. In the midst of a trial, it may seem as if the weight is too heavy to bear. People speak of coming to the end of their rope. They do not know how much longer they can hang on. They are tempted to give up. Mature Christians understand and practice the discipline of delayed gratification. James is telling Christians they must endure until the end before they receive the prize. Mature Christians do not expect instant gratification. A mature Christian remains faithful in suffering because it is the right thing to do. They know they will receive the crown of life on the other side. By this knowledge they are “blessed [happy, spiritually prosperous, and favored by God] Amplified Bible (AMP). When the trial is greatest, they keep their eye on the prize.
