E24. Bad Luck, Good God

Please read “E1. Meaning to the Meaningless” before reading any of my other articles on Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

Do you believe in chance? If you flip a coin, do you believe chance decides? I do; I believe God created this world in such a way that random chance determines a lot of what happens in our life. I also believe that a random factor sometimes results in good things happening, and at other times, bad things happen. I remember, about 20 years ago, reading in the newspaper about a pastor and his family that were all killed when a tree fell on their car. I do not believe that the finger of God reached down and pushed that tree over just as they were driving underneath. I recognize that some people view the world differently than I do. The writer of Ecclesiastes, studying the world around him, recognized the random factor at work. He does not mention the times chance resulted in something good. From his negative outlook, all he could see was the unexpected evil that befell people. He compares chance to a cruel net, or a snare that traps people in evil times.

I think he is partially right, but again because he does not know God, he has missed the bigger picture. Yes, somethings happen by chance, but the important things, the spiritual things, happen by plan and design. God made humanity’ salvation possible; He did it according to His plan, His design and in His time. “When the set time had fully come, God sent his Son … to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption… (Galatians 3:4)” In Romans 8:28 Paul tells us that in all things (even those things that happen by chance) God works for the good of those who love him. Too often bad luck is what we call the result of bad preparation. Salvation is too important to leave to chance. Today is the time for us to prepare to meet our lord. Bad luck is no match for a good God.
