H2. Christ, God’s Final Word

Hebrews 1:1-2 “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” (NIV)

The New Testament does not make the Old Testament obsolete. The New Testament makes the Old Testament complete. From the very beginning, God has been speaking to humanity. Sometimes he spoke through personal encounters. Sometimes he spoke through the words of the prophets. The word prophet is best understood to mean “forth teller” not “foreteller.” The prophets were not fortunetellers; their purpose was not to tell the future. They were God’s messengers, and they were telling forth his word. God spoke, and still speaks today through the words recorded in the Old Testament. Sometimes actions speak louder than words. The Old Testament records the mighty acts of God and the life of humanity in general and the Jewish people in particular. When the Hebrews held Passover, they were commemorating a mighty act of God in which He spoke of his power to deliver and of His great love. God’s messages were all pointing to humanities deliverance. God had a plan, and as he spoke to his children, he was preparing their hearts and minds to accept the gift of deliverance he was going to give them.

God completed his message of deliverance with the gospel, the good news, of Jesus Christ. With the death and resurrection of Christ, God’s plan of salvation was completed. The words, and the actions, of God’s Son Jesus, speak all that is necessary for our salvation; in Jesus God’s message of salvation is complete. Preachers still preach God’s word, but it is never a new word. As pertaining to salvation, there cannot and will not be any new revelations.

As Christians, we do not discard, or disregard the Old Testament. God laid the foundation of the Gospel of Christ in the Old Testament. As Christians, we do not allow new age teachers, or religions to add to the gospel of Christ. Christ on the cross pays it all. Christ on the cross says it all.
