H10. Control Starts with Self

Hebrews 2:5-8
I was born to be in control. That is not arrogance speaking, it is theology. Biblical theology teaches us that God created us a little lower than the angels. He created us with the intention of crowning us with glory and honor. He created us and put everything under our feet. That is another way of saying God created humanity to be in control of this world. He created us with the ability to create, and then placed us on an earth in which the possibilities are almost endless. While we were recreating our world and human society, God intended for us also to create an intimate and lasting relationship with him. When he put everything under our control, he left nothing out. We were to be rulers on the earth, on the seas, in the sky, over the beasts of the land and all things in creation. What a wonderful opportunity.

Yet when we look at the world around us, we see so much that is out of control. Scientists ask, “Can we do this?” They ignore the question, “Should we do this?” Science is running wild. We can split the atom, but we cannot control it. On a personal level, so many lives are lived like runaway freight trains. There are people who cannot control themselves, so in desperation they seek to control everyone around them. In an honest moment, we look at our lives and wonder how they went so very wrong. The answer is not complicated. The answer is sin, willful rebellious disobedience. When we as the human race sin, we release the power of chaos and death into our world. Sin has caused us to fall very short of the honor and glory God intended for us. Our world is not right because humanity is not righteous. Christ returns to us the freedom to choose. We can choose to accept his salvation. Because of the power of evil, we will never be in complete control of this world. However, with God’s help we can be in control of self.
