Hebrews 2:9-11
Christ took a voluntary demotion. He went from ruling the universe to being lower than the angels. When he became human, he did not cease being God, but he did give up having God’s control and power. He emptied himself in order to become what we are. He became human in every sense of the word. Most people have not thought about it, but the baby Jesus had messy diapers. As a child, he would have got bumps and bruises just like every other child. The bible does not make it clear but I believe he made mistakes just as all children and young adults make mistakes. What he did not do was ever have within his heart a spark of rebelliousness. He was not born with an inner selfishness that is the very essence of the carnal human nature. As it pertains to willful deliberate acts of unrighteousness, Christ was sin free. Yet we know from the scriptures that he had human desires and at the point of those desires he was enticed and tempted in the same way that every human is. His relationship with his father kept him from being enticed into sinful disobedience.
In comparison to forever, Christ was human for just a little while. However, as any of you who have ever been seriously hurt know, his time on the cross would have seemed like an eternity. His awareness that at any time he could ask his father to end the crucifixion made it that much harder to endure. Through his suffering, he made our salvation perfect. God resurrected Christ as the firstborn of many. Because he suffered death, his father has now crowned him with honor and glory. By the grace of God, Christ tasted death for everyone. Because of Christ’s resurrection, we no longer need to fear death. Christ’s voluntary demotion gives us the opportunity to accept a promotion. The day we accept Christ as our savior, is the day he promotes us into the family of God.
