H14. Remaining True

Hebrews 2:18
Definition of “True” adjective: accurate or exact -correctly positioned, balanced, or aligned; upright or level

God is true. He exists in perfect position, balanced and aligned with all things and all beings. He is in right relationship with all creation. His nature is incapable of being warped or twisted. When Christ became human he remained true, but now the possibility of him being warped or twisted became real. As a man, Christ experienced the possibility of sin. Humanity is born warped and twisted. Until redeemed by Christ, we could never experience what it means to be righteous.

As a man, Christ experienced what it meant to be fully human. He had hunger and desires just as we do. He experienced many of the emotions that are part of the human existence. I believe he experienced doubt, fear, and insecurity. I believe he had a natural human desire to have others love and respect him. I believe he longed to maintain a close and intimate relationship with his family and God the Father.

The writer of Hebrews tells us he suffered when he was tempted. The writer of the book of James tells us that temptation attacks us at the point of our desires. When Jesus was hungry, temptation attacked him at the point of his desire for food. Desiring food when you are hungry is not evil. If Jesus had misused his powers to feed his hunger, that would have been evil. He was hungry enough that he was suffering, but he did not allow his suffering to cause him to sin. Sin would have eased the suffering of hunger, but the suffering of hunger is nothing compared to the suffering of being twisted and warped by sin. If the human nature of Christ had surrendered to temptation, sin would have made him untrue. He would have become unrighteous, and the evil that would have been unleashed upon the world is beyond imagination. All hope of salvation would have been lost. Christ overcame temptation and remained true. By overcoming temptation, Christ helps us to remain true.
