Hebrews 3:7-8
Not everyone hears the voice of God. Why is that? For some it is because they do not know to listen for the voice of God. When they were young, nobody taught them that God speaks. Nobody taught them that God created them and that he loves them. He wants to communicate with them. They do not know that God sent his only begotten son to live and to die that they might experience the presence of the Holy Spirit. They do not know that the Holy Spirit will speak to them, and they do not listen for his voice. For many others they are very much aware that the spirit of God wishes to communicate with them. They simply do not wish to hear his voice. They do not wish to hear his voice, because they do not wish to obey him. They know that God will not accept second place, and they have already placed themselves or something else in the top spot. They harden their hearts, and refuse to listen.
It is possible for the noise of the world to drown out the voice of God. We make that choice. We choose where we place our attention. My wife is always telling me that she has told me something that I do not remember having heard. It is not because she did not tell me. It is not because I am hard of hearing. I have not heard her, because I have not given her my attention when she spoke. Many times the Holy Spirit has spoken to us, but because we have not given him our attention, we have no recollection of it. Today God is still speaking to his people, and He still wants us to listen. God does not speak continuously. He is not a magpie that makes noise for noise sake. When he speaks, it is because there is something we need to hear. When God speaks, it is always worth hearing. What God tells us can change everything.
