Hebrews 6:13-20
Christian hope is not “wishful thinking”. Christian hope is a confident expectation and a firm assurance that what God has promised, God will deliver. Christian hope is not dependent upon the current situation. We do not have to understand how God is going to work. We do not have to understand the timing that God is going to work in. The knowledge that God has guaranteed his promise by his character and that he will keep his promise by his power, gives us the assurance we need to exercise Christian hope.
Christians have inherited the benefits of the promise made Abraham. In Genesis 22:17-18, God promised Abraham, “I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky … and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed.” God’s promise is still active today in the lives of Christians. Abraham saw the promise partially fulfilled with the birth of Isaac. The exodus from Egypt, and the foundation of the Jewish nation of Israel continued the fulfilling of the promise. With the birth of Christ and his death and resurrection, God extended the promised blessings to all nations. We will find ultimate fulfillment of this promise in our resurrection in the presence of God for eternity.
Christians face times of trials and testing. Life is often hard, and the future looks dark. In those times, we hold on to the promise of God. When it seems impossible, we hope. This heavenly hope is the anchor for our life. Christ entered the very presence of God, and while there, he tore the veil that separated us from God. He became our forerunner, so that where he went, we might go also. He entered into heaven and waits for us there.
Christian hope is not “wishful thinking,” it is an anchor for our soul. It is the calm assurance that comes from knowing that God always does what he says he will do. Christian Hope is anchored in the righteousness of God.
