Hebrews 10:3
Our faith, or lack of faith, determines everything. What we believe informs every decision we make and every action we take. This is true for both the small choices we make and the major decisions that are the turning points in our life. In 1971, Alka-Seltzer aired a TV ad with the catch phrase “Try It! You’ll Like It!” Soon everyone was using it. Mothers would use it to get their children to try broccoli and other unlikable foods. “Try it, you’ll like it” only works if the person saying it is trusted. If we trust wicked people, it is likely we will end up doing wicked deeds. If we place our faith in money, people, or possessions that faith will set the course of our life choices and actions.
Many religions of the ancient world believed that their gods shaped the universe. The Jewish faith believed God did not just shape the universe; He created it. He made something out of nothing. This is a foundational belief of Christian theology. Before there was anything, there was God. If time is a way in of measuring change, before there was time, there was God. God at the center of his being, in his very nature is unchangeable. When God begin to create, he created time. Everything that is, and everything it will be, starts with him. If everything were to end, He would remain. Nothing He sustains will end. Christians believe in eternal life because we believe God will sustain us forever.
If by faith, we understand that God created the universe from nothing, it will inform the choices and actions we take with our life. Contrasted to eternity, our lives are but a bleep in time. They are as nothing. Nihilistic philosophy would tell us that our lives are meaningless. That philosophy is wrong; our lives are not meaningless. We find meaning in a right relationship with God. When we trust Him, God, who made the universe from nothing, will make something beautiful of our lives.
