H42. Worthy Offering

Hebrews 11: 4
Any god that demands worship, is not worthy of worship. I heard this spoken by an atheist, and upon reflection agreed with him. It was about the only thing upon which we agreed. He had faith that there is no god. I have faith that God exist, not because I can prove it, but because in my heart I know God. He has made himself known through his scripture, through the life of his son Jesus, and most importantly of all through the presence of his Holy Spirit in my life. He created us to have a relationship with Him; no relationship based solely upon one party making demands upon the other can be healthy. As we grow in our knowledge of God, we worship him; not because he demands it, but because we have discovered he is worthy of our worship. The relationship between God and humanity is not one sided; we give him love and worship, and he gives us forgiveness, eternal life, freedom from sin, guidance and strength and so much more.

By faith Abel knew that God was worthy of worship, and he made an offering of the firstborn of his flock. Abel offered his best to God, and God recognized his offering as being sincere and righteous. Cain also offered an offering. Cain did not make his offering with a righteous intent. God told him that if he did what was right God would accept it. In Genesis 4, we read that Cain offered “fruit of the ground.” I believe the phrase means just want it says. Cain made an offering of fruit that had fallen off the tree and off the vine and had hit the ground. The fall had bruised and damaged it. Cain gave God everything he had that was not worth keeping. No wonder God rejected it. Like Abel, Christians offer God our best. Because of the fall, our best is bruised and damaged. God accepts it not because we are worthy, but because He is.
