H53. Do Not Focus On Faith

Hebrews 12:2
Christ perfected faith. All the men and women in chapter 11 had commendable faith, but none of them had perfect faith. Their faith made a difference; Christ’s faith made a difference for everyone and in everything. They had faith in God; Christ gave up the power of God, became a man and placed his faith in God his father. They had faith for the next generation; Christ had faith for humanities eternal salvation. They had faith in spite of fear; Christ, who as God could never die, had faith with the certainty of death. Their faith caused them to make sacrifices; Christ sacrificed everything. They remain steadfast, and Christ remained steadfast unto death. They had faith in a better promise; Christ’s faithfulness made that better promise possible. They all had faith, but none of them had perfect faith. Christ became the example of perfect faith. Is faith in absence of all doubt still faith? Yes, faith does not require the presence of doubt, faith only requires the absence of proof. In the absence of proof, it is possible to know guarantor of the promise so well that there is no room for doubt. This is still faith, but it is perfect faith. Christ was able to perfect faith because he had a perfect relationship with his father; he knew him so well that when the final test came there was no room for doubt.

Having perfected faith, Christ is now perfecting our faith. The process begins at the point of salvation. The longer we walk in close relationship with Christ the better we know him, and the more trustworthy we find him to be. As he proves himself true, our doubts become weaker, and our faith grows stronger. If we desire perfect faith, then our focus cannot be upon faith. Perfect faith can only come from a perfect relationship with the one in whom we are trusting. If we are going to grow in faith we must focus our eyes upon Jesus.
