H55. Walk, and Continue Walking

Hebrews 12:1-3
To run the race successfully we must not allow the sin that so easily entangles to trip us up. Of the three definitions of sin, only one applies here. It is not willful transgressions, because Christians do not willfully disobey God. It is not missing the mark, because even the best Christians, no matter how carefully they aim, sometimes come up short. Sin, (Hebrew word Aven) the power of evil let loose in the world can and will entangle us if we let it. Sin in the world can trip up Christians in many ways.

Sin can entangle our emotions. I knew a woman who watched her son die when a reckless driver broke the law and ran over top of him. Her pain caused her to hate. The driver had sinned and released evil into the world, and her son had died. For years, she carried her hate and her unforgiving spirit. Sin had entangled her. The love of Christ healed her, set her free and helped her to forgive.

Sin can tempt us at the point of our desires. Overeating is a sin for some, and sexual morality is a sin for everyone. The culture we live in puts visual temptation in front of everyone. Advertisers use sexuality to sell everything from beer to automobiles. We see eye candy on billboards, TV advertisements and in newspapers. Unfortunately, this temptation does ensnare some Christians. If overeating is your personal sin, stay out of the pastry shop. Do not watch the great British Baking Show. Be aware of the way sin in the world tempts, and flee temptation.

Evil is at work in our world. A whole family disowns a new Christian. Terrorists firebomb a Christian church service. A vindictive person spread lies about a Christian. Such evil can cause a Christian to lose heart.

Sin cannot entangle us against our will. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” Sin cannot entangle us when we walk, and continue walking with Jesus.
