Romans 14:13-23
Why are these verses not obsolete? After all, they are about the conflict between Jewish Christians and gentile Christians. Before the first generation of Christians had passed away, the church recognized itself as distinct and separate from Judaism. There would have no longer been a need to discuss Christian behavior as it pertains to nonessential Jewish traditions. Unfortunately, human nature being what sin has made it, always seems to find ways to separate rather than unite. What was true at the beginning of the church is still true today 2000 years later. Christians still dissent over many issues.
Let me list just a few. Can you be a Christian and drink, smoke or gamble? Do you have to speak in a special language or tongue to be spirit filled? If your congregation refers to itself by any other name than “The Church of Christ” is it still the church? Can a church be Christian and have instrumental music played in the service? Can a local congregation choose to meet on a Saturday instead of Sunday and still be Christian? Are some types of music ungodly no matter the words? Can women teach or preach in a Christian service? These questions do not have equal theological importance. In answer to all, some Christians say yes, some say no.
I am not stating that I believe all beliefs are correct. I am stating that I believe Paul would tell us that love does not attack another because of their beliefs. Love does not go looking for opportunities to sit in judgment upon fellow Christians. Love knows to keep somethings between God and ourselves alone. Somethings have changed since Paul wrote to the church at Rome. We can choose between a greater variety of denominations and local congregations. It is easier to find a group of believers that align with our beliefs. If we are not in unity where we are at, we can look for a new church home. We must not be destructive in our current church home.
