Judges 17-18 Shining The Light on Cults

Micah founded a cult, but he was not a cult leader. Personality-based cults seldom survive long unless a replacement has been groomed to step in after the death of the founder. Micah founded a religious cult based on the Jewish religion. Rather than centering around Micah’s own personality, this cult, like all religious cults, was founded upon a corruption of the theology of the original religion.

Micah’s cult would continue to claim that the God of Israel was their God. He and the cult’s followers kept many of the practices and rituals of the original Jewish faith. They claimed to be Jewish, in spite of the fact that at the very heart of their worship was an idol which was in direct contradiction to the commandments of the Jewish God.

True Jewish faith centered on maintaining correct relationships both with God and all mankind. The focus was upon godly obedience and not sacrifice. The cult’s focus was upon the manipulation of God through the use of sacrifice. Their belief was that through the capturing of the image of God in an idol they now had the ability to manipulate God for the purpose of their own enrichment. When the unrighteous splinter group from the tribe of Dan stole the idol, they also took the priest and the corrupt theology. They embraced the cult and made it their own. The priest and his descendants led the cult up until the time the land was taken into captivity. As they continued in their false worship, the true house of God was maintained in Shiloh by true believers. Children who grew up in the cult would not have known they were living a lie.

Today christian cults abound. They name Jesus and claim to follow Him. They cling to the outward rituals and signs (baptism, communion and the cross) of Christianity. However, cults will always reveal themselves by their un-Christian theology. Christian Theology is the light of truth that when shined into a cult’s dark deception will set people free.
