Blind people are always in the dark. They live in darkness not by choice, but because they cannot see. This is true of physical sight, but it does not have a spiritual parallel. Nobody is spiritually blind because they do not have the ability to see.
Christ is both Light and Word; as Word He created all creation and His light illuminates all that He has created. He did not create mankind with an inability to have spiritual sight. Sin has caused the fall of mankind and it shattered our right relationship with God, but it did not cause us to lose the ability to see the light. Because mankind was living in darkness, Christ came into the world so that His chosen people might recognize him as the Light. He came to the nation of Israel. He shined brightly, but they did not receive him.
Although the chosen of Israel did not receive the light, they could not prevent others in the world from seeing the light and recognizing Christ as God himself. Others not only recognized Him, but they received Him and believed in Him. God responded to their belief by adopting them as children of God. They were not children born of Abraham, they were children born of the faith that God gives.
Spiritual blindness is a choice. It requires denying Christ, fleeing His presence and choosing to embrace the darkness of sin.
