John 2:13-17 Cleansing Injustice

God has nothing against organized religion; God is the originator of order. Out of chaos, God created order, and all that is, was created by God, and is held together by His will. God brought the Jewish nation and the Jewish religion into existence. From one man, Abraham, God created Israel. In the Old Testament he laid down a system of order to guide their worship, their daily living and their national relationships. God does not frown upon organization just because of what it is.

When Jesus walked into the court of the temple what he saw was not chaos, but organization. Everything there, from the money changers to the livestock dealers, was organized; there was a plan behind it all. The leadership had decreed that foreigners, and even local Jews, could not use common currency as offering; they had to exchange their money for temple currency in order to give to God. With every exchange, the religious leadership made a profit. When Jewish believers brought an animal to sacrifice it was never good enough, so they had to sell theirs and buy a new one from the traders that was acceptable. The traders would then resell theirs to the next person needing a better animal. Every last bit of the process was organized for the maximum profit to the religious leadership; none of it was for the maximum praise or worship of God.

What Jesus was witnessing was not organized worship, but rather organized greed, deceit and the fleecing of his spiritual flock. Everything God organized to help His people meet Him, worship Him, and have a relationship with Him was being perverted by unrighteous men seeking personal wealth and power.

Jesus did not respond with a disorganized chaotic riotous rampage. He very systematically, using only the force necessary, cleansed the temple. He did not call down lightning to strike people dead and he did not use fire to consume the wicked. Christ cleansed injustice in the least destructive way possible, Christians must do the same.
