John 4:35-38 Choices

I have a lot to learn. Don’t laugh; you do to. In fact, the day we are born is the start of a learning process that should not end until the day we die. This is true in an earthly sense, but especially true of our spiritual rebirth in Christ. Our walk with Christ is a journey where He is the teacher and we are students. As He teaches and we learn, we are being perfected. In this life we will never be perfect. I believe we can have perfect Christian intentions, but I do not believe we can ever achieve perfect performances.

Christ began teaching his disciples what it means to live righteous. There are many things that prevent Christians from hitting the mark of righteousness. However, there are two major reoccurring hindrances. One is allowing worldly attitudes to control us and the other is being controlled by spiritual and emotional immaturity.

Christ addresses both of these points early in His teaching. An immature person puts off difficult tasks; they procrastinate. Christ tells His disciples that the harvest is not four months off; the fields are ripe now and the day of harvest is here. When Christians procrastinate or fail to see the necessity for immediate action they miss the mark. They allow their immature attitudes to prevent them from doing the work of God and the world suffers.

It is natural for newborn Christians to have a worldly attitude. They have been raised and indoctrinated by the world. The world is concerned about self more than others. This attitude is manifested in the church as a desire to receive praise and credit. Christ tells His disciples that it is not important who sows or who reaps. Righteousness is not about credit it is about results.

Christ, and the Holy Spirit will teach us Holy attitudes and maturity. The more we learn, the more effective we are at reaping the harvest and rescuing our world. God always chooses to teach, but we still must choose to learn.
