You don’t have to know it all to know enough. When Kathy and I got married 17 days after we first met, we did not know it all. 16 years later, we still do not know all there is to know about each other. However, we do know that our marriage has been a blessing from God.
The followers of Jesus knew a great deal. They knew that He claimed to be the bread of life. They knew that manna was a gift of God from heaven and yet all who ate it eventually died. Jesus claimed He was bread that when eaten would give eternal life. They knew that believing Jesus would require commitments and choices that were hard to make and harder to keep.
In spite of all that they knew, there was a great deal more they did not know. They did not know about the coming final meal when Jesus would break bread and serve wine and institute the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. They did not know that Communion would become an essential part of Christian worship. They did not know the symbolism involved in eating and drinking the flesh and blood of Jesus. They did not know, in spite of His many times telling them, that Jesus was going to sacrifice his own life for them. They did not know He would be crucified, placed in a grave and resurrected. They did not know he would ascend into heaven.
In spite of what they did not know, they all knew enough to make a choice. Some chose to quit following Jesus, while others continued following Him in spite of their lack of understanding. Neither group knew it all, yet both groups knew enough to make a choice. Those who left , and those who stayed both had the same knowledge, but they made different choices. We will never know everything, but from the first time we meet Jesus, we will know enough to make a choice.
